On May 27, Marcel, a sixteen-year-old boy from Poznań, started a journey from the border of Świnoujście with one goal – to visit seven capitals of Northern Europe by bicycle: Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen. On the way, he is accompanied by his family friend Macejs, who is no stranger to traveling – he has traveled to more than 100 countries and even built a school in Nepal!
I meet Marcela and Maceja in Riga in the evening, before they both continue on their way to Estonia. About two thousand kilometers have already been driven, but both are smiling and happy, they don’t look road-weary at all, but enthusiastically ready for new impressions.
When asked how they like Latvia, both hesitate for a moment, but then Marcel says that it is beautiful here and the first impression of Riga is great, because there are many pleasant people, impressive statues and buildings, a beautiful old town, nice cafes and an incredible amount of greenery. Marcel says – there is a lot to see and get to know. The only minus (which is also very noticeable) is that the bicycle infrastructure is not developed and there are few cyclists on the streets, but those who are are mostly bicycle couriers…
