BULELENG-Cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are still a scourge in Buleleng. Almost every year there are always cases of death due to dengue. Now we want to combat this case by releasing other mosquitoes which are natural enemies of dengue-spreading mosquitoes. How to?
The mosquito larvae were placed in a 40-millimeter jar, like a jar used to collect urine. Flick was moving freely and actively. The larvae are the larvae of the Aedes-aegypti mosquito. The difference is, these larvae will not spread the dengue virus, but will eradicate it.
The larvae are Aedes mosquitoes.wolbachia. The mosquito contains a naturally occurring bacteria called wolbachia which can fight the dengue virus that can cause dengue hemorrhagic fever. The disease is considered deadly.
In Buleleng Regency, almost every year there are cases of death due to DHF. In 2020 there were eight cases of death due to DHF. That number drops to three cases in 2021 and two cases in 2022.
Meanwhile, in terms of case numbers, Buleleng is still quite significant. In 2020 there were 3,402 cases of dengue fever. Then it will drop to 1,023 cases in 2021 and 875 cases in 2022. Meanwhile in 2023, there will be 616 cases.
Various ways have been done. Starting from applying education to drain water reservoirs, closing water reservoirs, and burying used goods, to do fumigation. However, it has not yielded significant results.
This year the government will try a new way. Namely fighting the Aedes-Aegypti mosquitoes that contain dengue, by deploying Aedes-Aegypti mosquitoes withwolbachia. The program is supported by the World Mosquito Program (WMP) and Australian Aid. It is said that the program has been successfully implemented in Bantul, Jogjakarta. This year a similar method was duplicated in Buleleng and Denpasar.
WMP claims that mosquitoeswolbachia still bite humans, just don’t cause dengue. But only cause ordinary itching. mosquitoes withwolbachia will also mate with mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus.
When mosquitoes wolbachia Females mate with male dengue mosquitoes, their larvae will become pregnant wolbachia so it can’t spread dengue. Conversely, if the mosquito wolbachia males mate with female dengue mosquitoes, the female dengue mosquitoes will still lay eggs but the eggs cannot hatch.
“We are worried that the unpredictable weather will cause dengue cases to soar. We believe that efforts to release mosquitoeswolbachia This can significantly reduce dengue cases,” said the Head of Disease Prevention and Management of the Bali Health Service, I Wayan Widia, in launching The Wolbachia Campaign in Bali, which was held at the Buleleng Balancing Beach, Tuesday (4/7).
According to him, efforts to spread mosquitoeswolbachia I’ve tried it in Jogjakarta. This shows a decrease in cases of up to 77 percent. Even the hospitalization rate also fell by 88 percent.
For the initial stage the program will be tested in Buleleng and Denpasar. Later every week there will be 10 million mosquitoes that will be released. Mosquitoes will be released regularly over the next six months. Furthermore, a similar program will be expanded to all districts in Bali.
Meanwhile, Member of the House of Representatives Commission IX, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said that the dengue cases in Bali were very worrying. Including in Buleleng. Even Buleleng was once the area with the highest dengue cases in Indonesia. The government, through BPJS Health, also has to spend a lot of money on dengue prevention. “We hope this new method can control cases effectively,” said Kariyasa.
He also asked for public understanding. According to him, this prevention program will release new mosquitoes. But he guarantees that the mosquito will not spread dengue cases, but will fight it.
