Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Four scientists were locked up by the United States Space Agency (NASA) for a full year. They will stay from 25 June 2023 to July 2024.
The four are Kelly Haston (a biologist), Ross Brockwell (a construction engineer), Nathan Jones (a doctor), and Anca Selariu (a Marine microbiologist).
Scientists will live in a habitat similar to the Martian environment in the CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) mission. The mission was carried out in a 1,700 square foot space at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
The mission will also involve Extra Vehicular Activities (EVA), where they will enter a landscape of red sand. The four of them will wear space suits in the framework of the spacewalks simulation, quoted Science Alert, Tuesday (4/7/2023).
All activities during the mission are prepared similar to those on Mars. Starting from freeze-dried food, activity schedules and delayed communications.
Especially for delay communication refers to the way they connect with the outside world. Just like communication from Mars to Earth also takes up to 22 minutes.
Indeed, not everything will be like living on Mars. For example related to gravity on the planet which is not implemented in that habitat. But NASA is prepared for challenges such as equipment failure or water shortages.
CHAPEA principal investigator Grace Douglas explained the mission would help when humans are sent to Mars in the future. Including when the astronauts were returned to Earth.
“The knowledge gained here will help us send humans to Mars and bring them home safely,” said Douglas.
