Pommelien Thijs is back on Dutch soil after a duet with Meau after just under 2.5 years. The 22-year-old Flemish singer has since grown into the biggest pop sensation of the moment in her own country. She scored several number 1 hits, racked up awards, hit number 1 in the charts with her first album and is now playing a leading role in a series that will soon appear on Netflix.
She was only 19 years old in 2020 when Jaap Reesema asked Pommelien Thijs for a duet. He was impressed by her voice and he was not alone. Their song Now we no longer talk became one of the biggest hits of that year and reached the number 1 position in both Belgium and the Netherlands. In the Top 40, only Geike Arnaert preceded her as a Flemish singer who was at the highest position in that hit list. She did that together with Bløf with the song Zoutelande.
But after that great success, it became a bit quieter in the Netherlands around the singer. She could still be heard on the song Tranen by Kris Kros Amsterdam, but musically the Netherlands lost Thijs for two years.
#LikeMe
And it was precisely in those two years that a lot happened in Belgium around singing talent. Partly due to the Ketnet series #LikeMe – which can also be seen on Videoland – her popularity with the southern neighbors rose to great heights. The youth series was even so popular that despite #LikeMe being broadcast in the afternoon, the series could regularly be found in the higher regions of the viewing figures. The series is comparable to the American Glee. Thijs covered hundreds of popular Dutch songs in the series together with her colleagues.
But between recordings she also worked on a successful solo career. Her song Uncommon caused quite a stir in Belgium. She achieved double platinum and spent eleven weeks at the highest position in the Flemish Ultratop 30. At the most important music awards in Belgium in 2022, the single was proclaimed ‘hit of the year’, Thijs as ‘female artist of the year’ and as ‘ breakthrough of the year’. She also owes the last two prizes to other successful singles such as Wat een Idea and Silver.
Netflix series Knock off
As an actress, she is also making serious strides. After four seasons, the youth series #LikeMe was brought to an end. She leaves the good role of Caro behind and steps into the much rougher series Knokke off (with Anna Drijver and Jasmine Sendar), which will be shown on Netflix later this year. The series is full of drink, sex and drugs and Thijs plays the role of a rich girl who suffers from bipolar disorder. So very different work.
Musically, she also delivered a successful album with Per accident at the end of June. In Belgium it immediately hit the first place in the album chart and, remarkably enough, it also reached eighteenth place in the Netherlands. Her performances are sold out all over Belgium and she impresses creatively. She makes many of her outfits herself. For example, she made a top from the lips of collected cans. It can’t be crazy enough for her.
Duet met Meau
So Thijs now returns to the Netherlands. On Thursday she will perform a duet from her album at Renze. Together with Meau she sings Dream away the dark. And that she would collaborate again with a northern neighbor, she actually announced back in 2021. Then she said: ,,I really like how those different accents, Flemish and Dutch, mix with each other. It sounds very warm and fresh at the same time. A top combination if you ask me.”
Now the big question is whether after the conquest of Belgium, Thijs also starts a conquest in the Netherlands. Undoubtedly to be continued.
