All healthcare workers who are in direct contact with patients, people over sixty and other people who fall under a risk group may get a corona shot this fall. After that, they can get a booster vaccination every year.
Minister Ernst Kuipers (Public Health) writes this in a letter to the House of Representatives on Wednesday. He thereby adopts the advice of the Health Council to start a structural vaccination program against COVID-19. People who get a flu shot every year can assume that they are also eligible for the corona vaccination.
In total, about four million people could get the corona shot, the Health Council estimated at the end of June. For some groups, such as pregnant women and people who are at high risk from a medical point of view, a booster vaccination can be given throughout the year.
The Health Council does not consider a repeat vaccination for the rest of the population necessary, because the immunity of people under the age of sixty is good enough.
The intention is that people who do qualify receive adapted vaccines, says umbrella organization GGD GHOR. These vaccines should provide better protection against the corona variants that are now most commonly circulated.
Exactly what the new round of vaccinations will look like still needs to be worked out. For example, it is not yet clear whether each region will receive a few central vaccination locations.

Coronavirus is likely to be a ‘stayer’
According to the Health Council, the effect of the coronavirus is smaller than in the first years of the pandemic. But the advisory body expects the virus to continue to circulate and immunity to decline over time.
People are still getting infected with corona. Some have to go to the hospital and occasionally people still die from the consequences of an infection. This mainly concerns people from the risk groups, who are now eligible for a repeat injection.
