Besides wanting to acquire Activision Blizzard worth IDR 1,000 trillion, it turns out Microsoft also shows interest in buying Sega. But it looks like that hope can not be realized in the near future.
Because, Sega said that it is currently not interested in talks about the acquisition. Sega’s CO-Chief Operating Officer, Shuji Utsumi, said that they still enjoy being part of Sega Sammy Holdings.
“No, not now,” said Utsumi, as quoted detikINET from Bloomberg, Wednesday (5/7/2023). When asked further, whether Microsoft has made an approach, he refused to provide an answer.

It’s just that Utsumi’s response actually attracted people’s attention, because maybe in the future they will be open about the acquisition. Some analysts argue, that Sega might consider looking for a new parent.
Now the news regarding Microsoft’s plans to buy Sega, came from internal documents in their feud trial with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It is known that Xbox CEO Phil Spencer sent an email to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadell and Microsoft CFO Amy Hood.
The message landed in Nadell and Hood’s email inbox in November 2020. It contained Spencer asking for his blessing regarding his strategy to approach Sega Sammy Holdings, in an effort to acquire Sega’s game studio.
“We believe that Sega has built a balanced portfolio of games across segments with global geographic appeal, and will help us accelerate Xbox Game Pass both on and off the console,” Spencer said in a November 2020 email.
They are sure that by acquiring Segawill drive subscription growth Xbox Game Pass across PCs, consoles, and the cloud. That way Game Pass has new connoisseurs around the world, especially in Asia.
Actually, it’s not just Sega that they’re after. Revealed if Microsoft also targeting Bungie’s SonyZynga which was already taken by Take-Two, and IO Interactive.
