FC Memmingen vs. Lions: Solidarity Game Preview and Ticket Information

In the first test match after the training camp in Windischgarsten, the lions go to FC Memmingen. Kick-off in the Arena (Bodenseestraße 44, 87700 Memmingen) is on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 3 p.m. Löwen-TV broadcasts the game live.

The encounter is the so-called “solidarity game”. During the Corona period in summer 2020, the Allgäu decided not to host the semi-finals in the Toto Cup against TSV 1860 Munich. The waiver was made “due to the uncertain future for the club regarding the resumption of its game operations as a result of the corona pandemic,” according to the official statement. A staging with many spectators would not have been possible in Memmingen due to the conditions and restrictions at that time, and a move to the Grünwalder Stadium would not have been economically viable.

FC Memmingen therefore gave up without a fight, the Löwen advanced to the final and won it 5-2 after a penalty shoot-out against Würzburger Kickers. In return, the “solidarity game” was agreed, with the proceeds benefiting the traditional Allgäu club in full. Tickets purchased at that time, most of which were not returned, are still fully valid for this encounter. The new, attractive multifunctional building, the e-con ArenaPark, will also be accessible to VIP guests and sponsors for the first time at this event. Official opening is planned for September.

FC Memmingen has been back in training for two weeks. Head coach Stephan Baierl was able to start the preparations with a full squad of 25 players. Last season, the team played with the little lions in the Bavarian league, but managed to return to the Bavarian regional league as second in the table via relegation.

The best-known players in the Allgäu team are 37-year-old Dominik Stroh-Engel and 35-year-old Manuel Konrad, both of whom have plenty of professional experience in their careers. In the 2013/14 season, Stroh-Engel was the top scorer in the third division with 27 goals, marching from the third division to the Bundesliga with SV Darmstadt. Konrad defended for many years in the 2nd Bundesliga for SC Freiburg, FSV Frankfurt and Dynamo Dresden, last played against the Löwen in the 3rd division as a professional for KFC Uerdingen 05.

The core of the Memmingen team that has been promoted has stayed together, was selectively reinforced for the regional league with goalkeeper Dominik Dewein (FC Gundelfingen), the defensive forces David Bauer and Lukas Gerlspeck (both TSV Rain) and striker Bojan Tanev (TSV 1860 Rosenheim) and supplemented by their own young talents , so that every position in the squad is filled at least twice.

For the FCM, the game against the lions is already the dress rehearsal for the new season. A week later it’s already in the 3rd round of the BFV-Toto-Pokal to local rivals 1. FC Sonthofen. Another week later, the first regional league point game is on the program. Click here for last year’s runners-up FC Würzburger Kickers.
