Scheduled on Center Court at Wimbledon against Dan Evans due to rain, Quentin Halys qualified for the second round by beating the Briton in four sets.
Interrupted by the night on Monday evening when he was leading 6-2, 6-3 against Dan Evans (30th in the world), Quentin Halys (79th) was to resume his match on court n°2 on Tuesday afternoon. But the rain came to spoil the program and forced the organizers to postpone all the matches planned outdoors until Wednesday. All but two: the one between the Argentinian Etcheverry and the Spaniard Zapata Miralles (won 7-5 in the fifth set by the Argentinian, who will face Stan Wawrinka in the second round and possibly Novak Djokovic in the third) and the one between Halys and Evans!
After Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie, the Briton is the other darling of the Wimbledon public, and his match was therefore transferred to Center Court once the official program was over. It was therefore on one of the most legendary courts in the world that the native of Bondy finished his match, only the third of his career at Wimbledon (he had lost in the second round last year). And he won 6-2, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in 2h55!
Halys has a shot to play
Author of 23 aces and 57% of first serves, Quentin Halys managed the small feat of never being broken during this meeting. He won the first set on Monday by breaking at 2-1 and 5-2 then the second by taking the opposing service at 2-1 and saving four break points while serving to win the set. When the match resumed on Tuesday, the 26-year-old Frenchman complained of pain in his left knee following a slip and called in the physiotherapist. However, that didn’t stop him from pushing his opponent to the tie-break with no break point to defend. But he lost the tiebreak 7-5.
It was therefore necessary to play a fourth set, where Halys saved a break point at 3-3, before seizing his chance at 5-4 in his favor. On the service of the Briton, he managed to lead 30-40 and finally concluded on his first match point! For the second time in his career, he will play the second round of Wimbledon, and he will have a shot against the 87th world Aleksandar Vukic. In all, there will have been at least one French victory during this rainy day on Tuesday!
