The Dangers of Illegal Traditional Medicines: A Warning from BPOM RI

Indeed, the best choice to check the health condition of the body is to go to the doctor, then take the medicine that has been prescribed. But besides this, not everyone can do it.

For various reasons, many people often prefer the option of using over-the-counter medicines or traditional medicines as first aid. In fact, taking drugs not according to prescription and body condition, can be disastrous.

The reason is, not all drugs on the market can really treat it, in fact some are actually dangerous. Because of this, we should be selective in maintaining our health, including taking medicine.

As recently, the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM RI) has released a list of names for illegal traditional medicines. It is known, there have been many cases of illegal traditional medicines that have occurred in Indonesia.

“Throughout 2022, BPOM found 777 cases of illegal traditional medicines throughout Indonesia, namely traditional medicines without distribution permits and containing medicinal chemicals (BKO),” wrote BPOM RI in a release on Instagram.

Furthermore, BPOM RI also said that traditional medicines that do not have distribution permits cannot be ascertained about their efficacy and safety.

“Traditional medicines that do not have distribution permits cannot be ascertained for their safety, efficacy and quality. Meanwhile, traditional medicines containing medicinal chemicals pose a risk to the health of the body, such as the kidneys and liver,” he continued.
