Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The horror of mass shootings is back to haunt the United States (US). Even in the moments approaching Independence Day, July 4th, mass shootings took place and claimed the lives of its citizens.
Collect Reuters, at least three incidents occurred. Mass shootings hit Baltimore, Philadelphia and Fort Worth, Texas, which claimed the lives of 10 people.
In Baltimore, the incident occurred Sunday local time. Two people were killed and 28 others injured, half of them children, when someone opened fire at an outdoor party that was in progress.
In Philadelphia the incident occurred Monday night. Five people were killed and two injured when someone in a bullet-proof vest opened fire on residents at random.
The police also confirmed the possibility that the perpetrator shot people he might not know. It was reported how a toddler and a teenager were among the injured.
The most recent shooting occurred in Fort Worth. Three people were killed and eight others injured in a mass shooting following a local festival.
Police said no arrests had been made in the shooting. Investigation is still underway.
“We don’t know if this is household related, if this is gang related. It’s too early to say at this point,” said a senior police official, Shawn Murray, Tuesday (4/7/2023).
The new incident adds to the horror list for the US because of the large number of mass shootings and incidents of gun violence. According to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive – which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are shot and not including the shooter – more than 340 mass shootings took place in 2023 in the country.
In the first half of 2023, it is believed that mass shootings will reach 679 cases. This is about double the 336 recorded in 2018.
“That would mark the second highest annual total over the past nine years, behind only the 690 recorded in 2021,” the nonprofit group said.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden condemned the latest shooting. He reiterated his government’s call to tighten America’s lax gun laws.
“Our nation has once again experienced a wave of tragic and senseless shootings,” the president said in a statement released yesterday.
“Biden is asking Republican lawmakers to come to the table with some common sense,” he added, poking fun at his opposition’s continued resistance to efforts to curb the spread of guns in society.
Republicans in Congress have generally blocked efforts to significantly reform gun safety laws. The Democratic opponent opposed Biden’s push to reinstate the assault weapons ban.
Citing analysis data from the University of Washington Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, the US has by far the most gun deaths per capita of any high-income country. This is a bad record for the world’s economic rulers.
