The Top 10 Cooperatives with the Highest Turnover in the World

Which cooperatives have the highest turnover in the world?

The 300 largest cooperatives and mutuals in the world together record a turnover of more than two trillion dollars (2.171 billion USD) in 2020. This is revealed by a recent rapport the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the European Institute for Research on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (Euricse).

These large global cooperatives, of which we present the top 10 on our infographic, operate for the most part in two economic sectors: insurance (101 companies) and agriculture (100 companies). Wholesale and retail trade is the third most represented economic sector in the ranking (59 companies).

As our graph shows, there are two banking groups and one distributor on the world podium. Like last year, the first two places go to the French group Crédit Agricole (88.97 billion dollars in turnover in 2020) and the German cooperative of traders REWE (77.93 billion dollars). The third place is occupied by the German cooperative banking group – BVR (58.02 billion dollars in 2020).

Most of the 300 largest cooperatives in the world come from the most industrialized countries, such as the United States (71 large cooperatives), France (42), Germany (31) and Japan (22).
