Afghanistan’s Taliban Regime Shuts Down Women’s Beauty Salons, Escalating Crackdown on Women’s Rights

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan has ordered women’s beauty salons to be closed within a month. The head of the Islamic Emirate issued a decree banning the operation of women’s beauty salons in Kabul and other provinces. The issue has become the latest blow to women’s rights in Afghanistan. After the withdrawal of US troops on August 15, 2021, the Taliban regime that took power in Afghanistan is ending the rights of women in the country one by one.

Last year, high schools and universities for girls in the country were closed. At present, the law of the country only allows girls to get 6th standard education. Later, women were dismissed from government and private jobs. Women were banned from public places such as public bathrooms, gyms and parks. Women can leave the house only with a male relative. On the other hand, the Taliban ruled that women who go out alone should not be allowed in vehicles.

Within months of the US-led takeover of the Afghan government, beauty salons had sprung up in Kabul and other major cities in Afghanistan. However, after the Taliban came to power, the pictures of women painted outside the salons were painted black and the salons where women worked and ran were closed. After the Taliban banned the freedom of girls and women, the countries of the world protested and stopped funding to Afghanistan.
