Exploring Alternatives: Drones, Lasers, and Air Pollution on July 4th

About Those July 4 Fireworks and Air Pollution

As concerns over wildfires and air quality mount, some cities are considering alternatives to traditional fireworks displays on July 4 and other holidays. With issues such as air pollution, wildfires, and supply chain disruptions, cities are exploring options like drones and laser shows to celebrate Independence Day.

Salt Lake City, for example, has decided to replace its fireworks with synchronized dancing drone displays to avoid worsening air quality and the risk of setting off more wildfires. Boulder, Colo., and Minneapolis are also opting for drones and lasers, respectively, as these technologies have been easier to source than fireworks in recent years.

The decision to reconsider fireworks displays comes as wildfire smoke from Canada has once again blanketed much of the United States. New York City officials have debated whether to proceed with fireworks on the 4th, but as of Monday night, no decision had been made. Across the border, Montreal canceled its July 1 Canada Day fireworks due to poor air quality caused by over 100 wildfires burning across Quebec.

Fireworks are known to cause a spike in a form of air pollution called particulate matter, which is also elevated from wildfire smoke. Particulate matter less than 2.5 microns wide can enter people’s lungs and bloodstream, leading to breathing problems and inflammation. Children, older individuals, and those with existing health conditions like asthma and chronic heart disease are particularly vulnerable.

To mitigate the risks, experts recommend watching fireworks from a distance to minimize particulate matter exposure. Wearing N95 face masks, which protect against both the virus and smoke, can also help reduce the impact of air pollution. On July 4 and 5, fine particulate matter levels across the country rise by an average of 42 percent, with levels during fireworks displays increasing by as much as 370 percent.

While fireworks displays are often allowed as “exceptional events” by local, state, and tribal governments, they still exceed the Environmental Protection Agency’s standards for day-to-day outdoor air quality. Other countries also experience similar spikes in air pollution during major holidays.

In addition to air pollution, fireworks pose risks to animals. Dogs and other household pets often become distressed by the loud noises, leading to an increase in lost or runaway pets after the holiday. Fireworks also disrupt wild animals, with a study finding that many birds abandoned their sleeping sites during crucial rest stops on their migrations on New Year’s Eve.

In 2022, there were an estimated 10,200 fireworks-related injuries and 11 reported deaths in the United States, with many injuries occurring from smaller firecrackers and sparklers used at home rather than during large public or commercial shows.

While experts understand the appeal of fireworks and don’t want to stop the holiday festivities, they urge caution and consideration of alternatives. Fireworks lead to just a couple of days of visible air pollution, while communities deal with less visible but still harmful air pollution daily or seasonally from sources like vehicle traffic, industrial pollution, and wildfires.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed strengthening its air quality standard for fine particulate matter to better protect public health, but it still allows for special consideration of “exceptional events” like fireworks displays.

What are the environmental advantages and disadvantages of using drones and lasers instead of fireworks for celebrations

E exposure to particulate matter. They also suggest staying indoors with windows closed and air purifiers running during fireworks displays. Additionally, individuals can wear N95 masks to filter out some of the harmful particles in the air.

In recent years, the impact of fireworks on air pollution has become a growing concern. The heavy metals and chemicals used in fireworks can contribute to air pollution and have adverse effects on both human and environmental health. Furthermore, fireworks release large amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

As cities look for alternative ways to celebrate July 4 and other holidays, drones and lasers have emerged as popular choices. These technologies provide a visually stunning experience without the negative environmental impact. Drone displays, in particular, have gained popularity due to their synchronized and choreographed performances. They offer a unique and innovative way to celebrate while minimizing the risks associated with traditional fireworks.

Despite the advantages of these alternatives, some argue that fireworks are a longstanding tradition deeply ingrained in American culture. They argue that the joy and excitement of watching fireworks on Independence Day cannot be replicated by drones or lasers. In response, advocates for alternatives emphasize the importance of embracing change and finding new ways to celebrate that prioritize environmental sustainability and public health.

While the decision to move away from fireworks displays is a step in the right direction, it is ultimately up to each city to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each option. As the impacts of climate change and air pollution continue to grow, the need for more eco-friendly and sustainable celebration alternatives becomes increasingly evident. Whether it’s through the use of drones, lasers, or other technologies, cities have the opportunity to redefine what it means to celebrate while protecting the planet.
