Bremen’s honorary captain had been suffering from dementia for years and lived with his wife in a retirement home near Bremen. Recently, his health is said to have deteriorated sharply.
Höttges had earned the nickname “Eisenfuss” during his professional career, he was an uncompromising defender, the fans loved him for it.
