“Couple therapists advise that in relationships it is better to ask questions than to vehemently assert your position. The same applies in documentary filmmaking, it is good to show your partner that you are interested in what is bothering them. Especially if you want to find out from someone why they believe complete nonsense,” advises documentary filmmaker Vít Klusák in the 100 Days of Spotlight debate on how to talk to people who believe misinformation.

“They’re surprised that you’re interested in them at all. They’re not used to it,” recalls the director of the filming of the documentary about the covid pandemic, Big Nothing and people who are subject to misinformation. But Klusák does not believe that some people are really subject to propaganda to the extent that they sometimes claim – especially in connection with the war in Ukraine.
“For example, when someone in Ukraine has a bombed-out house, dead neighbors that they had to bury, yet their relatives from Russia say that it’s all nonsense. The disinformation apparatus is so consistent that the Russians don’t believe it, they’re just afraid to admit the truth,” he describes filmmaker.
According to Klusák, the best fight against disinformation is to communicate with people and explain to them what is happening in political circles, before disinformers have time to abuse the topic.
“This is neglected by the current government. It looks like they are doing something ‘behind the scenes’ and we don’t know much about it. They invest far less energy in telling us what they are really doing. And I feel the disappointment of people who may not have access to some to a wide range of media and they have the impression that they have no idea what’s going on up there. And that there’s some trouble brewing,” the documentarian appeals to government politicians.
And according to him, how much does ex-prime minister Andrej Babiš, about whom Klusák filmed the documentary Matrix AB, resent that he did not win the presidential election? “I think enormously, because when I’ve talked to the people he’s put out of business in various sharky ways, they’ve told me that he either takes everything or nothing. That his strength is in his ferocity and competitiveness, where he just has to destroy everyone, ” says Klusák, but adds that fortunately Babiš’s star fades and goes out. “But maybe the wish is the father of the idea,” he adds.
