Médiathèque l’Apostrophe 1 boulevard Maurice-Viollette, 28000 Chartres Chartres 28000 Eure-et-Loir Centre-Val de Loire 02 37 23 42 00 The Hôtel des Postes transformed into a media library is nearly 55m high and 33m long. The reinforced concrete building, with a metal frame, is made up of a belfry with a clock with corbels and an imposing rotunda dominating the Place des Épars. This eclectic building is inspired by the medieval constructions brought back into the limelight by Viollet-le-Duc and mixes neo-Gothic and Art Deco elements. The reference to the cathedral is undeniable: many details recall the Gothic style as can be seen on the north bell tower of the cathedral.
At the level of the facade decoration, a succession of mosaics evokes the story of a letter transported by land, rail, sea and air and delivered by a postman to a peasant woman from Beauce.
From the porch and under the mosaic symbolizing peace, General de Gaulle addressed the population in August 1944 when Chartres was liberated.
The Hôtel des Postes has been listed as a historical monument since August 19, 1994; its grids in which are inserted the acronym PTT (Postes, Telegraphs and Telephones) are classified as well as the facades and roofs. The building is labeled “remarkable contemporary architecture”.
