Kelly Kozyra’s Journey to Recovery: Rebuilding a Nose Destroyed by Drug Abuse

35-year-old Kelly Kozyra from the state of Illinois in the USA was for a long period addicted to cocaine and crack.

One morning six years ago, her husband did not wake up and he was pronounced dead from an overdose. Then Kelly decided to start a drug-free life.

She stayed sober for eight months, before suffering a relapse that lasted three and a half years.

During the relapse, the 35-year-old took several heavy drugs, which came at the expense of her nose. On TikTok, she says that it simply disintegrated.

She says that her nasal septum was eroded from all the cocaine snorting.

New nose: – Ingrown hairs

In October 2022, the process of creating a new, well-functioning nose began by harvesting skin, tissue and blood vessels and muscles from her arm and from her head.

Since then, she has been through several operations. Among other things, doctors created an attachment between her forehead and nose after skin transplants, to make the skin cope in the new location.

The skin transplanted to the nose contained hair follicles and sweat glands, which resulted in Kelly growing hair on the tip of her nose for a period.

Slowly but surely, the new nose has started to take shape. This week, Kelly has posted a video without the clip on her forehead, and the hairs on her nose have stopped growing.

– I’ve had a new operation now, and I’m very happy with how it looks, says Kelly, before she continues:

– The doctors fixed the inside of my nose very well. The skin on the inside comes from the arm, and the skin on the tip of the nose comes from the forehead. This is because they are the most similar in terms of thickness and pigment, explains the American woman.

– Like peach skin

She says that a lot of hair grew on the tip at the beginning, but that it has slowed down considerably.

– What is growing back now is like peach skin. Now I haven’t shaved it in months.

She also talks about some problems after the operation.

– Begged the doctors to amputate

– The skin inside the nose is thicker than what was there. I have operated several times to adjust the skin in there. After the first operations, it led to the nostrils being drawn in towards the nasal septum. It has become much better now, says Kelly.

Kelly herself says that she has been sober since January 2021. She shares videos of herself on social media to inspire others, and at the same time warn of how bad things can go if you abuse drugs.
