Mothers who give birth by caesarean section may be curious about what good stitches look like. A number of doctors also have different methods for caesarean stitches. Since a caesarean section involves surgery, the baby is delivered through an incision in the abdomen and uterus.
In general, C-sections are safe but will leave scars after the incisions heal. The good news is that C-section scars are usually small and below the bikini line. You probably only have faded lines that are barely visible.
Dr. Debra Rose Wilson, a professor, researcher, and holistic health practitioner says that there are different types of incisions, types of closure, ways to support healing, and minimize scar tissue.
“It’s important to know that a C-section isn’t just one incision or cut, but two. The surgeon will make an abdominal incision, and then an uterine incision to remove the baby. Both incisions are about 4 to 6 inches long — large enough for your baby’s head and body to fit come in,” Wilson explained as quoted from Healthline.

For an abdominal incision, Wilson continues, the surgeon can make a vertical incision from between the navel to the pubic line (classic cut), or a horizontal side-to-side cut across the lower abdomen (bikini cut).
“Bikini cuts are very popular and are preferred because they tend to be less painful and less noticeable after healing,” says Wilson.
While the classic incision is more painful and leaves a more visible scar. However, this classic incision is sometimes necessary for an emergency C-section because it can help deliver the baby more quickly.
In the bikini cut across the abdomen, the surgeon will make a bikini cut incision of the uterus, which is called a low cross sectional incision. If the abdominal incision is classic, the uterine incision is also classic or a vertical incision.
“Because you will be receiving two incisions, one in the abdomen and one in the uterus, the surgeon will close both incisions,” says Wilson.
