In some exchange offices it is now possible to buy dollars below the face value. Exchangers are forced to sell dollars at a discount due to the fact that customers do not want to take them at face value.
Owners and staff of exchange offices complain massively about the changed conditions for the sale of currency.
After the National Bank forbade exchange offices to take a commission for old-style dollars or simply for currency with minor traces of wear, Ukrainians began to massively sell obsolete banknotes in exchange offices, that is, those that were printed before 1996.
However, when buying currency, citizens refuse to take outdated banknotes, preferring brand new ones with a protective strip and all other attributes. Thus, a situation arises when banknotes do not seem to be spoiled by anything, but they do not want to take them.
Moreover, it happens that the number of old banknotes bought from the population per day reaches a critical mass. In such cases, exchangers have to reduce the price of obsolete banknotes below face value.
“If ten thousand [старых] dollars – and this amount, plus or minus, corresponds to the real daily turnover – for which there will be no demand, then this point can be closed. The exchanger will not be able to work for sale for a day, two, four,” said the deputy director of one of the network of exchange offices.
Thus, now in some exchangers you can buy a dollar, for example, for UAH 36.5 instead of UAH 36.8. Moreover, even at such a reduced price, buyers are reluctant to take the outdated currency.
Recall that the Ukrainians were told what to do if the bank refuses to accept old banknotes.
