Despite requests from the Consumers’ Association, Albert Heijn still puts offers with the wrong price on the receipt. The union is therefore investigating legal action against the supermarket. Albert Heijn says in a statement that it is surprised.
Jumbo and Plus almost no longer go wrong by putting incorrect amounts on receipts. The union states that this is the result of intensive talks between the union and these supermarkets.
At the end of April, the Consumers’ Association reported that for the third year in a row it had become apparent that a lot had gone wrong with the price stated for items on the shelf and the price charged at the checkout. The price of one in six purchased offers turned out to be incorrect at the checkout. In most cases, these errors are to the detriment of the consumer.
The union demanded that the supers resolve the issues by June 30. The managements of AH and Jumbo promised that customers would receive the product with the wrong price on the receipt for free. They would also hire so-called mystery shoppers to detect errors and remove incorrect price signs.
That was also successful at Jumbo. Plus also removed many incorrect price signs from the branches. “But Albert Heijn, despite repeated requests from the Consumers’ Association, does not come across the bridge with reports of the promised extra checks,” said the consumer organization.
Furthermore, there are still errors on the receipt, there are billboards in the store with prices that are no longer correct since October 2022 and AH does not fulfill the promised price guarantee. For example, cashiers do not know about the warranty and the product is not given free of charge if the receipt is incorrect.
“Errors on the receipt are an unfair business practice. That is why the Consumers’ Association is now investigating legal action against Albert Heijn to put an end to this situation,” says director Sandra Molenaar. Furthermore, all three supers of the union must come up with a plan to compensate customers for incorrect receipts in recent years.
In a statement, Albert Heijn says it is surprised. ‘We are always in talks with the Consumers’ Association, precisely because we believe that any product with the wrong price is one too many. At Albert Heijn we have made improvements in recent months to ensure that incorrect prices on local offers are a thing of the past.’
For example, customers always receive the product for free if they identify an incorrect price, Albert Heijn reports. ‘Our measurements also show that the measures we have taken are effective and that incorrect prices hardly occur anymore. We have also shared this with the Consumers’ Association. We regret the findings of the Consumer Association.’ Albert Heijn wants to talk to the union.
What can you pay attention to when shopping? Six tips:
1. Check your receipt. If you really want to know whether you are not paying too much, there is no other option than to check the receipt.
2. Don’t be ashamed. Isn’t it right? Then don’t be ashamed to ring the bell.
3. Use a handheld scanner. With the hand scanner you can immediately see whether the price on the shelf differs from the price you should pay
4. Compare supermarkets with each other. If you have a choice and want to pay the lowest price anyway, compare the prices of the different supermarkets in advance.
5. Also save by purchasing smartly. Some products are better not to buy in the supermarket. Care products and items such as detergents are almost always more affordable at the drugstore
