India’s Tata Technology Group has signed an agreement with the Gujarat state government to set up a giga plant to manufacture lithium-ion cells with an initial investment of 130 billion rupees ($1.6 billion).
Tata Agaratas Private Energy Storage Solutions, a subsidiary of the giant Tata Group, recently signed a memorandum of understanding to set up an electric vehicle battery factory with a production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours, providing direct and indirect employment for more than 13,000 people, according to a state government document posted on its website. The state government said the Tata plant would make Gujarat a leading manufacturer of lithium batteries and the group would receive help in creating a production ecosystem in the state. A representative of Tata Group declined to comment. The Tata Group’s decision comes at a time when its Jaguar Land Rover unit is considering establishing a major factory for electric car batteries in Britain. Tata prefers a factory in England to Spain after the UK government offered a support package, Bloomberg reported in May.
