Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis apparently doesn’t consider himself a musician, according to a revelation he made during a recent appearance on an episode of This Little Light, the podcast hosted by his bandmate and bassist. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea.
Indeed, Flea got down to interviewing some of his fellow Chili Peppers on This Little Light, starting with guitarist John Frusciante on June 22. With Kiedis, on June 29, things took an emotional turn when the two protagonists started talking about the singer’s role in the Rock band.
Asked by the Los Angeles Times on her favorite interviews, Flea replied: “A very good interview was with Anthony. We were both in tears because I had never spoken to him about such things. Anthony doesn’t really consider himself a musician and has never received any musical education.
Flaa added: “He was inclined to say we should change the name of the band to ‘Idiot and the Three Geniuses’ [L’idiot et les trois génies]. And people were criticizing him, you can imagine… Eddie Vedder [de Pearl Jam] is a kind of Pavarotti, but Anthony doesn’t have the same reach.”
Flea then explained that he disagreed with Kiedis: “I think he’s a very good singer. He is always learning and improving. When we started the band, they couldn’t sing a single note – they just shouted. Now he’s mastered his melodies, and he doesn’t even stick to them. He walks around and improvises.”
The to concluded : “I know who the great singers are – Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Roger Daltrey. But to me, all that matters for a musician is that they sound like themselves. And nobody sounds like Anthony Kiedis.”
RHCP are currently touring Europe to promote their latest two albums, Unlimited Love and Return Of The Dream Canteen, released last year.
