We could also have used ‘Least Dutch Cars’ as a headline, because here we like to buy large (or especially high) cars for not too much money. Let’s look at it from the other side. Don’t think of these cars as a value menu at the Mac, but a pricey appetizer in a five-star restaurant. These are nine cars where you get little car for a lot of money.
Mini Cooper Electric Cabrio
Electric SUVs? Masses are of them. Smaller EVs? Fed up. But electric convertibles? Not much, so far. Mini is not going to change that much: only 30 of these Dutch-built soft tops will stay here. Prices start at 62,990 euros. A lot of money, especially for 201 (!) kilometers of range…
Aston Martin Cygnet
Remains a bizarre story: a Toyota iQ with new headlights, bumpers and lots of leather inside, and then marketed as a real Aston Martin. Only 150 were sold, which is not surprising at a price of 41 grand – more than three times as much as the mechanically identical iQ cost at the time.
Fiat Abarth 695 Ferrari Tribute
This was Fiat’s attempt to break into the expensive city car market: an Abarth 500 in Rosso Corsa, with paddles behind the wheel, an extra 20 horsepower and some bits of carbon fiber. An official tribute to Ferrari, of which 500 were made for 34,900 euros each.
Audi A1 Quattro
Before the S1, Audi attempted to transform the posh A1 into something worthy of the Quattro name. To this end, it received 256 hp, four-wheel drive, turbo-look wheels and a WRC rear wing. 333 were built, of which only eleven came to the Netherlands, for 65k each.
Mini Inspired by Goodwood
This collaboration between Mini and Rolls-Royce appeared in 2012. 1,000 were made, of which only 100 (for £41,000) remained in the UK. A walnut wood dashboard, the softest leather in the history of mankind and lambswool carpets adorned the Mini Cooper S.
Aston Martin Cygnet V8
One anonymous buyer attempted to up the Cygnet’s image by ordering it with the Vantage S’s 4.7-litre V8. The amount paid is a closely guarded secret, but we’re told it was between 300,000 and 600,000 would cost euros to build another one. Is this the epitome of little car for a lot of money?
Smart Brabus Ultimate E
Benz tuner Brabus likes to add more power and toughness to Smarts. The Ultimate E convertible is good for 92 hp and 0 to 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds, which is not very ‘Brabus’. The price made up for a lot in that regard. In 2020 you only paid a small 50,000 euros for it…
Honda e
Apart from the limited Mini Convertible above, the Honda e is the only one of these nine that you can still buy new. Very nice thing – fun to drive, cute to look at, comfortable to sit in and well built. But for only 220 kilometers of range, 36 grand is a lot of money.
Peel P50
The smallest car in the world will cost you a lot of money if you want one of only 192 original copies. There are only 30 left, for which they casually ask for prices of 140,000 to 160,000 euros at auctions. You can pick up a “recreated” for about a tenth of that.
