Books – Ahmed Gomaa:
The Ministry of Health and Population has settled the controversy over the fact that e-cigarettes are less harmful than traditional cigarettes.
The ministry said in an awareness leaflet that e-cigarettes have severe damage to the respiratory and digestive systems and cause cardiovascular diseases.
She pointed out that e-cigarettes contain a huge amount of nicotine and harmful toxins that lead to chronic diseases and cancers.
Electronic cigarettes are one of the most common forms of obtaining nicotine, by vaporizing a specific solution and then inhaling it. The main ingredients of the solution, in addition to nicotine if present, are propylene glycol mixed with glycerine and with or without flavorings. The solutions and emissions of electronic nicotine delivery systems contain other chemicals, some of which are considered toxic, according to the World Health Organization.
The World Health Organization has previously stressed that “claims regarding the safety and effectiveness of e-cigarettes in smoking cessation are unfounded by scientific evidence.”
According to the organization’s website, “E-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a harmful and addictive component that affects brain development in young people. E-cigarettes are also associated with injuries and diseases, such as explosions and fires, infectious diseases of the throat and mouth, coughing, nausea and vomiting.”
The organization says that electronic cigarettes are dangerous, especially when used by children and adolescents, as nicotine is highly addictive, while brain development continues in young people until their mid-twenties.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers said that the use of e-cigarettes strongly increases the risk of developing chronic lung diseases such as asthma or inflation.
“E-cigarettes are being promoted as harmless, but they are not,” said lead researcher Stanton Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco.
The study concluded that e-cigarettes increase the risk of lung disease by one-third compared to those who never smoked or used e-cigarettes. The risk was greatest among adults who used both e-cigarettes and tobacco.
