Even before the wave in the form of the Crysis series hit the gaming world – valid in its time thanks to the art of the people from Crytek to the most technically advanced – there was Far Cry. The game, which was originally created in Crytek, subsequently followed its own path accompanied by Ubisoft, but the fact remains that on number one many gamers remember and, like Crysis, consider it a technological benchmark of its time. 2004 to be exact. However, the cult status of the first part could be further enhanced, since the complete source code has been leaked online, and it is therefore possible that the authors of the mods will rush at it with another wave of effort and try to squeeze even more out of the game than they have thrived over the years.
Vinícius Medeiros, a Brazilian lover of older games, drew attention to the leak on his Twitter, who shared not only a screenshot from web archive, where the source code was uploaded on June 24 of this year by a user with the nickname Llaetha.ro, but also screenshots of the code itself and a list of files dated December 13, 2005. According to the notes on the download page, it is likely that the leak occurred in connection with by adding support for playing via the game launcher from Ubisoft, but of course this is only an assumption and the real background of the leak has not (yet?) been revealed. It’s also important to mention that the code only contains data related to the PC version, and one of the users who has already managed to dig through it a bit claims that he was not able to compile it without errors. Even he himself does not rule out that he simply made a mistake and is therefore still there very it is possible that other clever people will be able to use the source code.
For what? The possibilities of what to do with the game with today’s tools are countless, so fans are already talking about adding ray tracing or path tracing, or even unofficial ports for other devices. Considering that the game also ran on the Nintendo Wii, some would like a Switch version, and there is even talk of a PlayStation Vita release. Of course, these are only current wishes that access to the source code could help give birth to, the authors of the modifications themselves and the fans in general will decide what to do with the source code. In the end, some would just love to see an AI cheat fix years later or gamepad control improvements, but we’ll probably have to wait patiently for this one.
