BMW XM Label Red Attempts to Beat the Production SUV Record at Pikes Peak

The record among production SUVs thus remains the Lamborghini Urus Performante model.

On Sunday, June 25, the 101st race to the top of Pikes Peak took place. Among the most interesting specials of the just passed race, we can include the Mazda 3 with a power of around 1400 hp, the Ford SuperVan, the Alpine A110 GT4 Evo or BMW XM Label Redwhich was supposed to attack the record among production SUVs.

The hybrid BMW XM Label Red had all the weapons to easily beat the Italian Lamborghini Urus Performante’s record of 10:32.64. It offers a plug-in hybrid combining a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and an electric motor together 550 kW (748 hp) and 1000 Nm torque.

However, the attempt itself did not succeed at all last weekend. The driver of the hybrid special Matt Mullins was already wide in the first corner after the start. A few minutes after the start, information was announced that the car had crashed. It’s not clear exactly how the incident happened, but in the stills from the video, we can see that the XM Label Red model is being properly brushed.

At the same time, Mullins is not a driving amateur, quite the contrary. He is the head instructor of the BMW Performance Driving School and is also a stunt driver. So there is no need to doubt his driving skills. Accidents like this happen occasionally in the world of motorsport.

Unfortunately, our hopes for a record drive with the BMW XM ended today with a racing incident. Pilot Matt Mullins is disappointed but unhurt. We are now concentrating on repairing the vehicle and will try to achieve the record later this summer,” the automaker said in a statement.

So we have to wait at least a few months to see if the XM Label Red model can beat the time of the Lamborghini Urus Performante achieved last year in a private attempt, paradoxically also outside the main uphill race. If we were to stay the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, then the record among production SUVs is held by the Bentley Bentayga with a time of 10:49.902 from 2018.
