Urban Violence in Champagne-Ardenne: 30 Arrests and Damaged Buildings

New urban violence took place in Champagne-Ardenne on the night of Friday June 30 to Saturday July 1. Thirty arrests took place in the Marne department.

Another night of urban violence in certain districts of several towns in Champagne-Ardenne. The police had to deal with it during the night of Friday June 30 to Saturday July 1, 2023.

The prefecture of Marne communicated many figures to the editorial staff. The main one: 36 arrests following the violence. There are 15 burnt vehicles and four damaged buildings (notably the Gérard Moulin school and a social and cultural center in Châlons); not to mention 28 garbage can lights, bus shelters, and video surveillance cameras.

On the Châlons side, residents deplore the damage to France 3 Champagne-Ardenne. “It was our parents’ school, mine, my children’s school, the neighborhood school… It’s sad to see all that.”

Another passerby is more vindictive. “It’s appalling, it has nothing to do with the story of Naël. I’m sure those who burned down this school, their little brother or their little sister are there. Now my own son doesn’t want to go anymore at school, which is next door, because he is afraid.”

She is joined by a like-minded parent. “They want revenge, but they are not logical. A white march is completely normal. But degrading to this point, I do not understand. I am stunned: for me, it is violence free.” However, this school in Châlons will reopen on Monday July 3.

Concern reigned in the city center of Reims: a call relayed on Snapchat encouraged young people from outlying districts to converge there. So everything had been closed. The police finally contained the rioters in the Europe, Châtillons, Red Cross, and Wilson districts, where other degradations took place from 10:30 p.m.

In addition, a policeman was injured. The police and firefighters were stoned. These firefighters had to intervene no less than 35 times during the night.

Henri Prévost, the prefect of the Marne, “once again strongly condemns the destruction and degradation of street furniture and buildings useful to all”. Il “calls for calm”. The use of a drone to record videos of the riots has been confirmed.

Troyes was relatively spared, it was its suburbs that were marred by violence. France 3 Champagne-Ardenne reporters on site in the Aube department witnessed various scenes of urban disorder, including a clash between young people from the Maugout district, in Saint-André-les-Vergers, and the police.

The next day, La Chapelle Saint-Luc woke up with burnt vehicles and looted businesses. This is particularly the case of a tobacconist.

The prefecture reported violence in Charleville, Sedan, and Revin. In the first, the Ronde-Couture district was the scene of the destruction of five vehicles by fire, despite a strong police presence.

On the Sedan side, a garage was attacked and two vehicles burned in it. And in Revin, the gendarmes on patrol came under projectile jets, damaging their means of transport. They weren’t hurt.

It is not yet known whether the protective devices will be maintained this Saturday evening, July 1.
