Many drivers only have a copy of the vehicle registration document with them. But is this enough for a police check?

There are a number of important documents for drivers: in addition to the driver’s license, the vehicle registration document and the vehicle registration document are particularly important. The original driver’s license is usually included – even if it can be legally saved in an app – but many drivers often only take a copy of the vehicle registration document with them. But is that enough for a police check?

Drivers must present the original vehicle registration document – a copy is not sufficient

This question can be answered clearly and unequivocally: No! The registration certificate Part I, as it is officially called, must always be carried in the original in the car. A copy is not sufficient for a police check. This is stipulated in Section 11 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV).

There it says: “The registration certificate part I or the corresponding list of trailers according to paragraph 2 must be carried by the respective driver of the vehicle and handed over to the responsible persons for inspection upon request.” However, the vehicle registration document (registration certificate part II) does not have to be carried and should therefore be kept safe be kept at home.

Keeping the vehicle registration document in the car is not a good idea

If you only have a copy of the vehicle registration document with you, you risk a fine of ten euros. To prevent this from happening in the first place, many drivers leave the Part I registration certificate in their car. The glove compartment or the sun visor are particularly important. In the event of a police check, the vehicle registration document is then also directly at hand.

However, this is not a good idea and can become a problem in the event of theft and jeopardize insurance coverage. The costs of obtaining a new vehicle registration document should it be lost, meanwhile hurt a lot less. In the event of loss, a copy is also not sufficient, since the document can usually be reissued immediately.
