Insurers Brace for High Costs as Riots Continue

How much will the riots cost insurers? While France experienced a fourth night of violence, between Friday June 30 and Saturday July 1, insurers reactivated their crisis cells, report The echoes. Supports which require having subscribed to a contract and whose amount of compensation will vary according to the ceiling of the guarantees and the deductibles.

“Given the circumstances […], you can declare your claims until July 31, 2023”, and this, “by any means”, specified on its website SMACL Assurances, a subsidiary of the mutual insurer MAIF specializing in local communities. A “specific device” has been put in place. The insurer “may make advances on the final compensation” in order to facilitate repairs and promote the return of employees to their place of work.

In fact, the damage is already significant. In Lyon, for example, in the single night from Friday to Saturday, “about forty stores [ont été] attacked, vandalized, looted, around twenty vehicles burned, ”said the city’s environmental mayor, Grégory Doucet, notes Le Figaro. Over the same period, nationally, 1,350 vehicles were set on fire, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

CITIZENS The past is telling and dizzying: very significant damage took place during the demonstrations of the yellow vests in 2018-2019 as well as during the urban riots of 2005. During this last event, which lasted nearly three weeks, 10 000 material claims had been recorded, 82% on automobiles, according to the professional federation France Assureurs.

In today’s constant euro, the cost had been 204 million euros for the insurance companies. The bill for the revolt of the yellow vests was even higher, 249 million euros, concerning more business premises and homes. Hence, also, the calls for a return to calm from the government: a crisis that lasts is a crisis that costs, and not only politically.

If they do not have cover, victims can turn to the Crime Victims Compensation Commission (CIVI). However, his intervention, subject to conditions of resources, is limited to 4,332 euros
