French Government Considers Imposing State of Emergency Amid Escalating Riots

The French government is considering imposing a state of emergency throughout the country, in an attempt to contain the escalating anger and riots in the street, in response to the killing of a young man, Nael Al-Marzouki, at the hands of the French police.

Experts who spoke to “Sky News Arabia” from Paris expected that the French government would have to adopt emergency measures within the next few hours, to contain the escalating violence in the street, and avoid the security situation getting out of control.

And the Elysee announced earlier that the security situation in the country does not require imposing an emergency, but the escalation in the street during the past hours may force the government to impose exceptional measures, according to experts.

Prime Minister Elizabeth Born said, on Friday, that the executive authority is studying all possibilities to restore order in France, including imposing a state of emergency after the riots continued.

Emergency is a last resort before the government

Researcher and political analyst Joan Souz, a member of the French Syndicate of Journalists known as “SNJ”, considered that the protests in France had failed to be peaceful, and the violence, riots and burning of public property in Paris, Marseille and a number of French cities had developed very rapidly.

Souz, who spoke to “Sky News” near the protests in Marseille, expected violence and riots to continue in French cities for several days to come, which might make the government compelled to impose a state of emergency, at least in cities that are witnessing a major escalation at the present time.

According to Souz, the French government may start urgent measures to prosecute the policeman, the murderer of Nael of Algerian origin, before announcing emergency measures in order to calm the street as well and defuse the crisis.

What is an emergency?

The emergency measures give the French authorities additional powers to announce specific curfews, prevent demonstrations, and give the police greater freedom to arrest suspected troublemakers and search homes.

– The option to impose a state of emergency was used in the aftermath of the bloody attacks in 2015, as well as in 2005 as a result of the riots that erupted after the killing of two young men who were chased by the police.

government responsibility

French politician Mourad Al-Hattab believes that the French government must take responsibility for the incident, which sparked chaos and anger in the street.

Al-Hattab stressed in a statement to “Sky News” the need for action by the authorities to resolve the crisis, protect public property, maintain public security, and calm the street.

Al-Hattab called for the start of urgent trial procedures for the policeman who caused the crisis, announcing the results of the investigations transparently, and dealing with what is happening frankly, criticizing the government’s attempt to obscure some facts.

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the local authorities would deploy additional reinforcements to control riots in the country, accusing “gangs” of participating in the violence.
