JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The figure of the leader of the Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, Abdussalam Rasyidi Panji Gumilang, is now back in the spotlight.
Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School is in the public spotlight because it is full of controversy.
The Islamic boarding school applies an unusual way of worship, for example, the staff for the Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijriah prayers are mixed between men and women.

In addition to implementing a different way of worship, Panji is also said to be related to the Indonesian Islamic State movement Regional Command 9 (NII KW 9).

However, there is a common pattern in recruiting members, namely they are required to pay regular fees to be deposited.
According to a former NII activist, Sukanto, there are a number of funding obligations or contributions that must be met by NII KW 9 members.

The obligation, said Sukanto, starts from an infaq of 25 NII dollars per month, with the dollar exchange rate set by the NII different from that of the state.
In addition, there is an obligation to pay tax money when crossing the area, up to fines if members smoke. Every member who violates must register his sin and confess it to the court.
“For example, we admit that 4 days ago we smoked two cigarettes and 2 days ago we touched a woman’s hair 100 times,” said Sukanto as quoted in an interview in the May 6, 2011 edition of the Kompas newspaper.
To pay for the funding, according to Sukanto, there are various modes that are worked out with other members. The methods range from claiming to have lost a friend’s laptop to making a fake proposal with a fake campus stamp.

According to Sukanto, he even witnessed Panji Gumilang’s practice of fundraising.
This happened during the commemoration of 1 Muharam in 2008. At that time, NII congregation from all over Indonesia came and were asked to stone the stone.
Within 1 hour, Panji managed to collect around Rp. 4 billion.
It is the practice of the obligation to collect money that is suspected to have made a number of NII members justify criminal acts such as theft and fraud. Another way is under the guise of asking for donations to orphanages or educational institutions.
In fact, according to information gathered, a number of NII members have even tricked their parents or siblings into fulfilling the dues obligation.

The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Muhadjir Effendy said that currently the handling of problems at the Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School is carried out from a legal and educational perspective.
“Therefore, we will see what Al-Zaytun will be like. But what is clear is that the fate of the students will be saved, especially the future of their studies,” said Muhadjir when met after carrying out the Eid prayers at the PP Muhammadiyah Jakarta Da’wah Building on Wednesday (28/6/2023).
Muhadjir ensured that the students at the Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School could continue their education if at any time legal action was taken over the alleged violations that occurred at Al-Zaytun.

He also said that life at Al Zaytun was not like an educational institution in general, but like a commune.

This was decided after the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security (Menkopolhukam) Mahfud MD met with West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil at his office on Saturday (24/6/2023) afternoon.
This meeting was also attended by the Head of the West Java Regional BIN (Kabida), Brigadier General Ruddy Prasemilsa Mahks, as well as representatives from the National Police, BNPT and the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag).
During the meeting that afternoon, Ridwan Kamil reported on the investigation process from the team he had formed.
This recommendation from a man who is familiarly called Kang Emil was then followed up by Mahfud with three legal steps.

One of them is investigating criminal acts committed by Islamic boarding schools. On the same occasion, Mahfud stated that the Indonesian National Police (Polri) would handle criminal acts directly.
“The National Police will deal with the criminal act. What articles will later become the basis for continuing the criminal process will be announced in due time,” said Mahfud, Saturday.
