Scottish actor, director and producer Ewan McGregor received the President’s Award of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival from Jiří Bartoška in the evening. McGregor, who gained international fame with Trainspotting, then released Second Chance with his daughter, actress and producer Clara McGregor.
“I think I’m very lucky to be an actor, I love what I do,” McGregor said, before also inviting his daughter Clara on stage. “It’s like a dream to be here,” said Clara McGregor.
McGregor began his acting career in the 1990s, when he got his first roles in TV series, but above all he started working with director Danny Boyle. He won the Empire Award for Best British Actor for his role in the black comedy Shallow Grave. Their next joint film Trainspotting from 1996 marked an international sensation. The adaptation of Irwin Welsh’s novel became the second most successful British film of all time.
McGregor first entered the world of Hollywood films as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Lucas’ Star Wars, then shot the war drama Black Hawk Down with Ridley Scott and the musical Moulin Rouge with Baz Luhrmann! The film won two Oscars, and McGregor received the European Film Award for his contribution to world cinema and his first Golden Globe nomination.
In the story Second Chance, a father and his twenty-year-old daughter, who have been separated for a long time, embark on a journey from San Diego to New Mexico. Years later, they find a relationship through the girl’s addiction problems. With every kilometer overcome in a drama full of gentle humor and parental love, they discover that they have a lot in common. Ewan McGregor’s acting skills were gradually sought out by other famous directors such as Tim Burton, Michael Bay, Marc Forster or Woody Allen, and his collaboration with George Lucas continued.
