Pelham Police Officer Seriously Injured in Impaired Driving Incident

Pelham, AL – A Pelham police officer, Elizabeth Minter, was severely injured in a series of crashes over the holiday weekend, prompting the Pelham Police Department to issue a warning against impaired driving. Officer Minter was directing traffic at a crash on Interstate 65 southbound when she was struck by a speeding vehicle in the early hours of July 1.

According to Pelham Police Chief Brent Sugg, the driver of the vehicle had ignored traffic control vests and emergency lights and was traveling at approximately 80 mph. The driver was taken into custody shortly after the crash, but details about charges are still pending an investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Officer Minter was quickly attended to by local officers and firefighters and was transported to UAB Hospital. She is currently in stable condition but has multiple injuries and faces a long road to recovery. Chief Sugg expressed the department’s struggle and emphasized that Officer Minter was simply doing her job when the incident occurred.

Chief Sugg also highlighted the significant number of impaired driving incidents that occurred over the holiday weekend in Pelham. At least two other crashes involving drugs and alcohol were reported. One of these incidents involved a driver going the wrong way on the interstate at a high speed, resulting in injuries to the occupants.

In another incident, Pelham police received multiple reports of a vehicle repeatedly crashing into the center wall on I-65 southbound. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that the driver and passenger, a father and son, had overdosed on fentanyl. Officers administered multiple doses of Narcan, reviving the men before they were taken to a hospital and later to jail.

Chief Sugg called for a responsible approach to celebrating the holiday weekend, urging people to put their phones down, be responsible with alcohol use, avoid illegal substances, use rideshare services, and slow down. He emphasized that all the incidents had one thing in common – drugs and alcohol – and urged individuals to hold themselves and others accountable to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Minter family has set up a GoFundMe page to support Officer Minter’s recovery, and the Pelham Police Department is also accepting donations for the same cause.

Impaired driving continues to be a serious issue, and incidents like these serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on the roads. Law enforcement agencies and communities must work together to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
