Vaccination Campaign in Boyacá: Improving Coverage in 123 Municipalities

Tunja

The staff of the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) in Boyacá is supervising the execution of the first vaccination cycle of 2023 in the 123 municipalities of the department, in order to improve vaccination coverage.

For their part, Fedegan (FNG) and the OEGAS carry out the farm-to-farm programming in each of the 123 municipalities of the department, and are obliged to inform each rancher of the dates on which the assigned vaccinators will be on the farms. In addition to indicating that all cattle and buffaloes present should be vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease.

The sectional manager of the ICA in Boyacá, Herberth Matheus Gómez, expressed that “the goal we have for this year is approximately 1,200,000 between vaccinated cattle and buffaloes and continue with coverage by department and municipalities above 95%, carrying out specific work and of greater effort in the municipalities that present a vaccination coverage in past cycles, below 90% ”, he specifies.

According to the official, by 2020 it was possible to recover the health status of a country free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination and it is our job to maintain it.”

It was specified that only batches of registered foot-and-mouth disease and bovine brucellosis vaccines that have been evaluated and approved by the ICA may be used, according to the sterility, safety, potency, and purity parameters established in the current standard.

But in case of presenting any adverse reaction, the vaccinator must be immediately contacted in the first instance so that assistance can be provided by the FNG veterinarians and the OEGAS.
