CIA Director Confirms US Non-Involvement in Wagner Rebellion in Russia

CIA Director William Burns confirmed on Saturday that his country had “nothing to do” with the brief rebellion of the private military group “Wagner” in Russia.

And Burns considered that “(Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war in Ukraine has already become a strategic failure for Russia.”

He said that the rebellion of the “Wagner” commander, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is “a Russian internal matter,” adding that this rebellion is “a vivid reminder of the devastating effects of Putin’s war on his society and his system.”

“It is always wrong to underestimate Putin’s obsession with controlling Ukraine,” he added.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Burns had made a phone call to the director of Russian intelligence, Sergei Naryshkin, after the brief rebellion in Russia last week.

The newspaper, quoting officials familiar with the matter, said Burns “calmly reached out to his Russian counterpart to deliver the message that the United States had no role in Russia’s internal chaos.”

“The United States was not involved. This is an internal Russian matter,” the communication said.

What is the impact of Wagner’s exit from the Ukrainian arena?

The officials said the phone call took place a few days ago and was the highest level of contact between the two governments since the attempted insurgency in Russia.

The head of the Russian private military group, “Wagner”, led an armed rebellion last week, but retracted it as his fighters approached the Russian capital, Moscow.

US President Joe Biden described the short-term rebellion as “part of a conflict within the Russian system,” and stressed that the United States and its allies were not involved in it.
