CF Montreal Aims to Break MLS Record with Seventh Home Shutout

MONTREAL – CF Montreal are just one home win away from breaking the Major League Soccer record held by the Kansas City Wizards in 2000.

The Montrealers will be looking for their seventh home shutout on Saturday night when they host New York City FC at Stade Saputo.

New York has won 10 of the 17 meetings between the two teams and has drawn five matches.

However, while the NYCFC team of years past had the innate ability to score at any time, this one fell silent. The club have failed to win any of their last 12 matches in all competitions and have only scored more than one goal twice in that period.

They are also one of only two teams in the league without a road win this season. However, Montreal does not see things as simply as that.

“That’s one of the reasons we’re so good at home, we have this mentality that no matter who comes on the pitch here, we’re going to go get the three points,” winger Ariel Lassiter said. . “There is a bit of history [between the two clubs] but we just have to go out there and play our game”.

The last time New York (4-7-9) visited Montreal (8-9-2) was in the Eastern Conference semifinals last year, where NYCFC called on their experience to come away with a convincing 3-1 victory. It really shows the difference an offseason can make since the two teams look drastically different this time around.

“We don’t have a lot of players right now who were there last year,” said coach Hernan Losada, who indicated that only three starters in this game are expected to play this weekend: Rudy Camacho, Joel Waterman and Victor Wanyama.

“Winning the game, maintaining this good result at home and putting on a good show for the fans should be motivation enough.

Midfielder Nathan Saliba, one of the new faces of the team, could be one of the new signings in this budding rivalry. After being forced out a number of times at the start of the season due to the club’s injury crisis, Saliba has clearly struggled.

“A lot of it comes down to a question of psychology,” he said. “The last times I played, I was able to let myself go and take more risks with the ball. I can be myself much more often on the pitch.”

With fellow box-to-box midfielders Mathieu Choiniere and Samuel Piette still doubts for Saturday’s game, this is another great opportunity for Saliba to show his potential.

“I’m very happy with his progress in such a short time,” Losada said. “We want to give the academy players minutes, but we want to see progression, and that’s what we’re getting with Nathan.

Kickoff at Saputo Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
