If observed, the stars not only look bright, but also appear to twinkle. However, in fact, stars don’t really twinkle. The stars appear to twinkle only from the point of view of humans on Earth.
1. Why doesn’t the Sun twinkle?
The other stars visible in the sky are very far from Earth. Meanwhile, the Sun is the closest star to Earth at a distance of about 93 million miles (0.0000158 light years).
The sun does not appear to twinkle, like other stars, because it is too close to Earth.
So, the Sun appears much larger than a small dot in the sky and therefore does not appear to twinkle.
In other words, stars appear so small because they are so far from Earth that they appear to be in more than one place because of atmospheric refraction, which makes it appear as if they are twinkling.
However, the sun is quite close and therefore tends to look like a disk rather than a tiny point in space.
2. Why do other stars seem to twinkle?
Reported from BBC Sky at Night Magazinestars twinkle because as light from stars passes through Earth’s atmosphere, it is bent and distorted by varying air temperatures and densities.
For this reason, twinkling stars have earned the scientific nickname “atmospheric shine,” which is an astronomical term for the rapid changes in a star’s apparent brightness or even star color produced by atmospheric irregularities.
A similar effect is seen in how humans view an object which may be distorted by heat rising from a hot radiator or roaring fire, for example.
This effect of atmospheric distortion can be captured in an image, by photographing the changing colors of the twinkling stars.
To most people, twinkling stars are beautiful because they make the dark night sky look beautiful.
However, for astronomers, the effect of twinkling stars can be a nuisance because it can cause images seen through telescopes to wobble.
