No bus ran on the Ilévia network in Lille this Friday morning following another night of riots in the department, after the death of Nahel killed by a policeman in Nanterre.

Another night of violence. The night from Thursday to Friday was agitated in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais for the third consecutive time, after the death of Nahel killed by a police officer in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) on Tuesday.

Demonstrators and law enforcement clashed for much of the night in the Lille metropolis, where the Raid had been deployed as a preventive measure. According to the northern prefecture, 58 people were arrested and 30 police officers were injured in the clashes.

6,000 calls were also recorded to the emergency number 17, which allows you to reach the gendarmerie and the police, against 1,500 on average.

No buses are running this Friday morning

In the early morning of this Friday, the stigmata are visible in the northern streets while for security reasons, the buses of the Ilévia network did not circulate until around 8 am.

“This decision makes it possible to guarantee the safety of travelers and agents on the Ilévia network”, specifies Ilévia in a press release which makes this safety a “priority”.

The two metro lines are running normally. However, the Porte de Douai station remains temporarily closed due to damage from the previous night.

An elementary school burnt down

The first incidents broke out around 9 p.m. this Thursday evening in the metropolis of Lille, in the sector of the police station where gatherings had been banned by the prefecture.

Numerous damage and fires took place during the night, particularly in Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing. The Coliseum in Roubaix was attacked while the town’s police academy was also targeted. The demonstrators were, however, repelled.

According to information from BFM Grand Lille, a fire broke out on the facade of the Augustin Thierry-François Launay elementary school in Lille. Fifteen firefighters were deployed around 7:30 a.m. to bring the flames under control.

The town hall of Wazemmes was also burned during the night.

A restaurant attacked

On the Lille-Sud side, a McDonald’s was also attacked by the demonstrators. A group managed to enter the restaurant and set it on fire. The firefighters, who intervened in time, quickly extinguished the fire. However, the counters and outdoor terminals have been degraded.

The restaurant will remain closed for an indefinite period, due to this damage, learned BFM Grand Lille.
