Code Red Air Quality Conditions Ease, But Uncertainty Remains on Cleanliness and Duration

Code Red Air Quality Conditions Ease in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. residents woke up to Code Red air quality conditions this morning, but fortunately, the situation improved throughout the day. Temperatures reached the upper 80s, which is normal for this time of year. The presence of rain in the area helped to clean up the air faster than expected, bringing some good news to the region. However, the extent of the improvement and how long it will last remain uncertain. Experts advise residents to take advantage of the cleaner air while it lasts.

Tonight, storms are expected to end in the eastern suburbs during the early evening. Once the rain clears, the sky will be partly to mostly clear, but it will remain muggy with lows near 70. Some areas may experience fog development.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the smoke in the air is expected to be significantly less than in recent days, although a haze may still be present. Air quality could be touch and go, especially for those heading east or northeast. The weather will be partly cloudy, increasingly steamy, with highs in the upper 80s. There is a possibility of showers and storms later in the day.

Sunday will mark the arrival of July with high humidity levels approaching the mid-70s for dew points. Temperatures will rise to 90 degrees or above, and the smoke in the air may further dissipate. Afternoon and evening storms are likely, with some potentially being severe. A slight haze, along with the usual summer pollutants, may still be present.

As we move into Monday and Independence Day, partly to mostly sunny conditions are expected as higher pressure moves in. The chances of showers and storms decrease compared to Sunday, and any precipitation near fireworks time should be isolated. However, temperatures will be rather toasty, with highs reaching the low 90s or possibly higher.

There is a possibility that smoke may return early next week as another low-pressure area passes through the lower lakes and enters the region. The exact impact of this system is currently uncertain.
