Changes to West Flemish Bus Lines: The Roll-out of the Basic Accessibility Decree

The roll-out of the first phase of the Basic Accessibility Decree will start on 1 July. This means that the West Flemish bus lines of De Lijn will change here and there. The basic principle was that the unused lines are abolished and the over-used ones are strengthened. Below you will find a brief overview of the changes in your region.

Transport region Bruges

The city of Bruges will receive 6 new city lines. These lines take you to and from the different neighborhoods around the center. Lines 1 and 2 run through the historic center via the station and ‘t Zand. Lines 3 and 4 start in Sint-Andries and end in Sint-Kruis and Van Zuylen respectively. Line 5 connects Sint-Michiels with AZ Sint-Jan and line 6 finally goes from Daverlo to Koolkerke.

In the Bruges region there are a lot of changes for the lines to and from Bruges. Some will get a different line number, a new route and/or a higher frequency. These are the lines with a new number:

In addition to the above adjustments, a number of new lines or more buses will be added to certain lines from 1 September. This is done in the context of the new school year so that students can commute more easily and smoothly.

In recent weeks, a number of protests have taken place in the transport regions of Ostend and Bruges, among others, following the roll-out of the basic accessibility project. The most common criticism is that too many stops are disappearing. De Lijn spokesperson Frederik Wittock says he is not blind to the protest or the criticism: “We are aware of the complaints. Nevertheless, I would like to emphasize that there is also a large group of people who are happy with the innovations. This has all been sufficiently communicated by the transport regions. Moreover, an evaluation has been scheduled after the trial period and we can then make any adjustments.”
