The Demise of TikTok Now and Decline of BeReal: A Case Study in Clone Apps and User Engagement

In 2022, many popular apps had a habit of creating their own clone of the photo sharing platform “BeReal”. Among them was also “TikTok”, which could not resist the temptation and came up with a new feature “TikTok Now”. However, it seems that it was not destined to have a long life. Less than a year after its launch, “TikTok” has announced that it will still be liquidated.

The news of TikTok Now’s demise comes just over nine months after its launch. It is not yet clear when this feature will completely disappear from TikTok. TikTok Now was launched in September last year with the aim of promoting an “authentic and spontaneous” experience on the app. However, the fact that it is identical to “BeReal” probably hindered the success of the feature in this regard. The only thing that made TikTok different was that users could post not only pictures, but also videos of up to 10 seconds.

BeReal had its heyday in the spring of 2022, when it was also the most popular app among iPhone owners. However, it has been reported that in the period from October 2022 to March 2023, the number of active users of “BeReal” decreased. According to Apptopia, the number of users has shrunk from 15 million to less than six million during that time.

BeReal is an overall unique app that notifies users once a day at a different time to share an image captured by the phone’s front and rear cameras, thus capturing the moment’s activity. True, to some extent, I think the app has lost its “spark”, because now, if you share a picture in time, you get the opportunity to make another “BeReal” picture later.
