YouTube Crackdown on Ad Blockers: What You Need to Know

YouTube appears to be launching a crackdown on ad blockers. There has been no mass deployment, so far the technology is apparently being tested, and the first redditors show what the campaign will look like:

Three videos and that’s it! The warning states that YouTube will block the ability to play videos unless the user removes the ad blocker (or whitelists the site).

“Ads keep YouTube free for billions of users around the world,” the text continues. It is also worth noting that ads can be removed for a fee in the YouTube Premium plan.

Until now, adblockers were shown an information message that they were committing something contrary to the terms of use of the service. The new strategy therefore means a fundamental hardening. Spokesperson for YouTube editorial staff Bleeping Computer said the new notifications are part of an experiment: “YouTube is conducting a small experiment worldwide that encourages viewers with ad blockers to enable YouTube ads or try YouTube Premium. In extreme cases, YouTube may temporarily disable playback.”

We don’t know the exact procedure for blocking videos, but if it proves to be effective, we can expect a large-scale deployment.
