Because Russian President Vladimir Putin is “somewhat weakened” after the short-lived mutiny of the Wagner mercenary army, the United States must now force a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. That says the 77-year-old former president Donald Trump in an interview with the Reuters news agency.
“I want people to stop dying because of this ridiculous war,” Trump said. According to him, Ukraine has resisted energetically since neighboring Russia invaded last February and the country has earned ‘credit’.
Still, the Republican presidential candidate does not rule out that Ukraine will have to give up territory in a possible peace agreement. The US and its NATO allies want Russia to withdraw from the territories it has taken in eastern Ukraine. If Trump is elected president again next year, everything could be negotiated, he says.
“I think the most important thing the US should be doing right now is to make peace, bring Russia and Ukraine together and make peace. You can,” Trump said. “Now is the time to do it, to get the two sides together to force peace.”
According to Trump, Putin is less strong since the short-lived uprising of mercenary army Wagner last weekend. “You could say Putin is still there, he’s still strong, but he’s somewhat weakened, at least in the minds of many people.” At the same time, Trump doubts whether Putin’s departure is really desirable. ‘You don’t know what the alternative is. It could be better, but it could be much worse,” Trump said. (AP/Reuters)
