Polish and Hungarian Prime Ministers Block Adoption of EU Migration Conclusions at European Summit

The two-day European summit started yesterday with a smooth discussion about Ukraine or security. Difficulties arose in the issue of migration. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki together with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán blocked the adoption of conclusions on migration.

Both heads of government of the Central European countries were annoyed by the recently adopted draft of new rules for asylum and migration policy, which the representatives of the member states gave their nod to during the meeting in Luxembourg. Morawiecki and Orbán wanted the summit to insist on unanimity on this matter and requested that it be directly mentioned in the written conclusions of the leaders’ meeting.

At the same time, the member countries have already adopted their position on the new rules by a so-called qualified majority, i.e. with the consent of fifteen countries representing sixty-five percent of the EU population.

Poland and Hungary were alone in their critical attitude. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) also opposed their demand, according to him, this attitude is dangerous
