Hessian Police Charges Climate Activists in 53 Cases – Costs Reach 28,285 Euros

Wiesbaden. In the first five months of this year, the Hessian police charged the costs of action in 53 cases following protest actions by climate activists. They include a total of around 28,285 euros, as the Ministry of the Interior in Wiesbaden announced on request. In 19 cases from the current year there would be a lawsuit.

In the past three years, police costs have been raised against climate activists in a total of more than 210 cases, as can be seen from a response from the ministry to a parliamentary question from the non-attached member of parliament Rainer Rahn. The ministry explained that it has not yet been possible to fully collect the deployment costs. Appeals have been filed by those liable to pay the costs, mainly through their lawyers.

By law, the police can, among other things, charge for the service times of the officers and, depending on the individual case, the expenses, as the ministry explained. These included, for example, rental costs for cherry pickers or doctor’s fees.

The Hessian police headquarters for technology collects the fees centrally for the state police. According to the information, a total of 14,780 cost notifications were issued in 2022. These are mainly police official acts in the event of false alarms, towing away, arrests, disturbances and arbitration. (dpa)
