The Hague Coalition Falls Amidst Controversy Surrounding Hart voor Den Haag Party

Jun 29, 2023 at 10:34 PMUpdate: 5 hours ago

The coalition in the municipality of The Hague fell on Thursday evening. The VVD has ended its cooperation with D66, CDA, PvdA and GroenLinks. This happened after a troubled council meeting.

The reason for the split is the way in which the coalition should deal with Hart voor Den Haag, the party of former alderman Richard de Mos. He was acquitted of corruption in April after a years-long trial. The Public Prosecution Service is still appealing.

De Mos now wants to return to college with his party. VVD, CDA and D66 are willing to discuss this. But PvdA and GroenLinks are and remain fiercely against this, they also made it clear during Thursday’s debate.

D66 proposed that the coalition talk to the entire opposition “and in particular with Hart voor Den Haag”. The party made that proposal on behalf of the entire coalition. During the debate, the VVD said that the name of that party should not appear under the proposal. Then D66 said that the motion was only from that party. This led to a public admonition for the coalition.

At the end of the debate, the VVD suddenly submitted a motion. It states that the coalition will “conduct exploratory talks with Hart for The Hague about the participation of Hart for The Hague in the coalition”. GroenLinks and PvdA voted against. After the result, the VVD announced the fall of the coalition.

VVD, CDA and D66 repeated after the vote that they are prepared to negotiate a coalition with Hart voor Den Haag. Together they would have 27 of the 45 seats on the council, more than enough for a majority. If the four parties reach an agreement, The Hague will receive its fourth college in five years.
