[헤럴드경제=손인규 기자]In the evaluation of peace level by country conducted by an Australian think tank, South Korea ranked in the upper-middle ranks, the same as last year. Iceland has held the top spot for 15 consecutive years. On the other hand, Afghanistan ranked the lowest.
According to the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2023 report released on the 28th (local time) by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an international relations think tank headquartered in Sydney, Korea ranks as a ‘peaceful country’ in 163 countries around the world. ranked 43rd. This is a two-step increase from last year.
As a specific score, it received 1.763 points. The closer you get to 1, the higher your ranking.
The IEP calculated scores for each country by quantifying 23 indicators in three areas related to peace: ‘ongoing internal and external conflicts’, ‘social safety and security’, and ‘militarization’. The indicators are composed of items such as the number of deaths from internal and external conflicts, relations with neighboring countries, the risk of terrorism, the level of violent crime, military spending relative to GDP, and nuclear and heavy weapons capabilities.
Among them, South Korea’s military expenditure last year was $66 billion (approximately 86 trillion won), ranking 10th in the world in terms of absolute amount.
By country, Iceland ranked first (1.124 points) for 15 consecutive years in the ranking of peaceful countries. It was followed by Denmark (1.31 points), Ireland (1.312 points), New Zealand (1.313 points) and Austria (1.316 points).
The lowest ranked country was Afghanistan with a score of 3.448. Yemen (3.35 points), Syria (3.294 points), South Sudan (3.221 points), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (3.214 points) followed in the bottom five.
North Korea ranked only 149th out of 163 countries (2.848 points). Last year, North Korea’s military expenditure in absolute terms was $211.3 billion (about 278 trillion won), ranking fourth after the United States, China, and India.
Russia ranked 158th (3.142 points), lower than North Korea, and Ukraine ranked 157th (3.043 points), one step higher than North Korea.
