Stuck in a pond in Louisiana since Hurricane Ida hit in 2021, a mother dolphin and her baby were finally rescued two weeks ago.
Wildlife experts finally transferred the animals on June 17. The Audubon Coastal Wildlife Network (CWN) believe the dolphins were swept away by the waves caused by the tropical storm.
“CWN monitors [les deux mammifères marin] for more than a year, waiting for the [petit] be old enough to move them to an area with access to open water,” the organization posted on Facebook.
Although the pond has sufficient food and salinity and tidal flow, there is no access to the Gulf of Mexico. Thus, it took a team of trained and qualified workers and authorities to bring them back to their natural habitat.
“It is common for storm surges and increased coastal flooding associated with hurricanes to cause marine mammals and sea turtles to be stranded on land or swept into inland waterways where they are generally not seen, such as lakes, ponds and canals,” CWN explained.
