The officials discussed the dismissal of Jalonen three times during the month, the Finnish coach and his implementation team had to present their own concept for the next season, but the ČSLH representatives were not satisfied with it.
“It’s true that, as a coach, I’ve never experienced a situation being resolved for so long. But it wasn’t like everyone was decided on the first day,” said union president Alois Hadamczik.
He himself was clear about his decision right after the unsuccessful May championship. In the end, nine of the eleven members of the executive committee were in favor of Jalonen’s dismissal.
The 58-year-old Rulík has so far led the junior national team, with which he won silver medals at the under-20 championship last season.
He worked as Vladimír Růžička’s assistant for the senior national team in the 2004/05 season and took part in winning gold medals at the World Championships in Vienna.
“We would like to present ourselves with hockey as at the 20-team championship. Play all-surface hockey, determine the pace of the match with pressure on the goal. Play on the puck and in a disciplined manner, because special teams make the decisions,” Rulík said.
For the new coach, it was crucial that the entire implementation team of the 20 team moved with him to A. In the new position, he will sign a two-year contract with an option.
Petr Nedvěd, who left it a year ago after four seasons, returns to the position of general manager.
The assistant will be his predecessor Martin Havlát, who is the only one from Jalonen’s implementation team to continue with the national team.
“I missed hockey, it’s in my blood and I’m glad to be back,” said Nedvěd. He left his position a year ago in order to devote himself to his family and young daughter.
“I was looking for a small kindergarten and I already found this one, so I can go back,” smiled the former outstanding striker.
When Nedvěd left his position, he officially had the main responsibility for nominations for the event. “We will all participate in the creation of the team, but I will have the final say together with Radim Rulík,” said Nedvěd about the current division of powers.
“I don’t consider it a problem that we will have two main responsibilities. On the contrary. We are here as one team,” he said.
As in the past, he is planning at least two overseas inspection trips for NHL players. “However, we will start communicating with them now, so that we have some idea whether the players are interested or not. I expect that the interest will be huge, but we need to get some picture,” said Nedvěd.
Jalonen, five years older, was the first foreign coach of the Czech national team. At last year’s WC, the team under his leadership won bronze medals, but this year’s championship did not go well for the national team. The Czechs were eliminated in the quarterfinals and finished eighth overall, which is the worst result in history.
Rulík, with whom assistants Jiří Kalous, Marek Židlický and Ondřej Pavelec will move to the A-team from the 20s, will lead the national team at the World Championships in Prague and Ostrava in May 2024.
Instead of Rulík, the Czech juniors will be led by Patrik Augusta, whose assistants will be Robert Reichel, Pavel Trnka and Martin Láska.
“I believe that we will be as successful as Radim Rulík’s team,” wished Augusta, who will work closely with his predecessor.
For example, everyone will go to Finland for the first event in July. “Just last week, we were the coaching team of the 20s and we prepared the event that starts on July 13. That’s why we agreed with Patrik that we will do it together,” Rulík explained. He then plans to include Augusta in his team after the Junior World Championships at the turn of the year.
