Surprising news emerged from Thursday’s meeting of the Czech Hockey Executive Committee. After nine months, Petr Nedvěd returns to the role of general manager of the national team.
He replaces Martin Havlát, who was dismissed by the management of the union together with Kari Jalonen’s implementation staff after a lengthy process.
However, he remains with the national team. “I chose him as my assistant,” informed Nedvěd.
“I missed hockey, it’s in my blood. I’m glad to be part of this crew.”
“I will try to help him as I tried last year. For me, nothing changes,” Havlát added to the choice of the (old) new GM.
The former outstanding striker left the position in September after four seasons – at the time he explained his decision with family reasons. Now he’s back after a short break.

“I was looking for a kindergarten for my little one and I found it, so I can go back to hockey,” joked Nedvěd in front of journalists.
But then he got serious: “No, I missed hockey, it’s in my blood.” I’m glad to be part of this crew.”
“I will try to help him as I tried last year.”
He will establish cooperation with the newly appointed implementation team led by Radim Rulík. Competence regarding the composition of the team will be shared: Rulík and Nedvěd will have the final say on the nomination.
In addition, as in the past, Nedvěd and his assistant Havlát will be in charge of communication with Czech players in the NHL. “I have at least two inspection trips planned for the big puddle,” he outlined.
“We will start communicating with hockey players from the NHL right now. It is important for us to know if they are interested in representing. From my own experience, I think that the interest in the home World Cup will be huge,” said Nedvěd.
“The skeleton of the team will be 35 players and will vary.”
At the same time, he announced changes in connection with the formation of the national team. “The squad will consist of 35 players and will vary. We don’t want to rotate 60 or 70 players,” he pointed out.
“The coaches have a clear vision, they have to see the players from the beginning. At the end of the Euro Hockey Tour, we have to be aligned, then only NHL players will join as the icing on the cake,” added the new GM.
